I am trying to find out what my great grandfathers gun is worth. On the gun it has his initials,it also says U .S.N 1843 and on the other side it says N.P. Ames,Springfield Mass. The wood is in pretty good shape. The brass could use a cleaning. The sping on the trigger does not work.Manually it does.Thats about all I know.

It appears to be the standard Model 1842 Percussion Navy Pistol, .54 caliber smoothbore. Flayderman lists value in good condition $700 but yours has some wood damage. Don't clean the brass or other parts any further as it will lower collector value.
