Need help identifying a H&R revolver

With my family over the holidays and my mother brought out a revolver her father had. It is Harrington and Richardson with the Worchester MA on the top of the barrel with a second line with about five or so patent dates, the last being April 7 1896. It is a top break revolver with a six shot cylinder. Under the cylinder (or over it??) on the barrel part is a number F54017. You have to take the cylinder off to see it. The grip looks black with a target at the top. It is a 5-inch barrel. There are no other markings that I can find.

Someone gave it to my grandfather years ago but we are not sure when.

Any idea how old this is and what model it is? What might it be worth? Should it be refinished or anything? Or just leave it?

Thanks for any help.
