My grandad has a rifle what we think is a musketoon, I have posted some pics below. Any help appreciated! I am from the UK not the US I don't know if that makes any difference but just thought id point it out many thanks!
The initials under the crown, in the second picture. VR? Victoria Regina, and I'm purty sure she was Queen-Empress then. The numbers on the top of the buttplate - June 15, 1883, I'd guess. Might be the date it was "redundanted" out of service. Does it have a double Broad Arrow on it somewhere? -><- Point to point?
Actually its a .577 caliber. .58 minies will work but are a little large for it and will get hard to load after just a few rounds. It should have a bayonet lug on the side of the barrel for a saber bayonet.
A minie has a hollow base with a thin skirt that flares out to engage the rifling when fired.
