A friend showed me this relic. It displays the attached engraving as well.
I think it's a centerfire. Caliber unknown, but appears to be .45 or more.

I can't tell for sure from the one pic but the markings lead me to believe its a MAS model 1892 manufactured by Nationale d"Armes de Saint Etienne (MAS) out of France. It was chambered in 8 mm Lebel the bullet weighed in at 120 grains at 720 fps delivering 138 ft lbs and was in service until ww 2. More pics showing both sides and any other markings would be better.
