If you are talking about at the end of the barrel (the muzzle break). It is supposed to keep the barrel from rising so much when fired. I don't think is serves much purpose on a semi-automatic.
As much as I love the AK and all it's variants, I'll be the first to admit it was NOT built for accuracy. It was/is a typical "spray and pray" machine gun. And yeah, like said above it's meant to keep muzzle rise lower during full auto or burst firing. As for semi auto versions, I guess it could come in handy to make bump firing a little more controllable. From my own bump fire experience, it doesn't make it any more or less controllable. Bump firing in general is hard to control regardless of the type of brake used.
