I just started reloading for .357 mag. I am loading 158gn hornady XTP over 11.5gn 2400 with cci 550 primers and winchester brass.
My question is on OAL , It is 1.590 for that load but out of the 50 I have loaded so far about 10 of them came out at 1.584 -1.589. Are these to short to shoot ? or do I have a little room to play with ?
Thanks for any help and for the great forum !

You have nothing to worry about. OAL is not critical in rimmed cartridges, and the tiny amount you mentioned is not a problem. Enjoy your reloads and welcome to TFF.

just to clarify a little for the OP, OAL on the CASE isn't as critical, since the case headspaces on the rim and not the mouth. Your OAL of the completed round is still VERY critical, a few thousandths isn't anything to worry about, but an oops in reading and a deeper seating of a tenth (.1) or even say 40 thou at a max load could be very bad, even with rimmed cartridges.

Azar, I started using non magnum primers with 2400 powder about 2yrs ago with much better results. not that it's a bad thing to use them.

Thanks for the help guys. I got out for a few hours this morning to try out my first reloads.

oldgunfan, did you have to adjust your powder to use non magnum or can you use the same charges and just work your way back up ?
