Forgive a newbie question. I came across a reference to the late Elmer Keith and a controversy about a 600 yard shot. The text didn't make it clear exactly what the controversy was. Can anyone shed some light on this?

The only thing I remember reading is that he used to shoot 3' stones at about 400 yrds with a .44 w/iron sights.

I dont remember anything about a 600 yrd shot...That wasn't the rabbit thing was it?

Elmer Keith dumped a Mule Deer, with a Single Action Colt, his loads, at 600 yds, up in Montana, as I recall.
Many called "BS" on the claim, but it was a witnessed shot (3 shots, actually), and has been repeatedly substantiated.
He was the guy who went to Smith and Wesson, with the idea of the .44 Mag, based on experimentation with the .44 Special, and was given the first of the revolvers now labeled Mod. 29!
While I do not agree with all he supported, the "large bore, heavy bullet, deep penetration" concept he espoused is a valid one, as he demonstrated so well.
As Einstein was to physics, so Elmer was to ballistics, and God bless him for his work and wisdom.

Thanks, guys. I can see where the controversy is - a 600 yard shot from a revolver ?! Hard to believe.

Keith believed in hard hitting loads (read higher velocity than published loads). He walked the bullets in (took multiple shots) to basically a stationary target of substantial size (deer). He also practiced shooting that pistol at long ranges. The shot was not his choice but as I remember the story he did not have a rifle along and was force to use the pistol. I don't remember why he could not use the guided hunter's rifle. Guess I'll have to re-read the account in his book. It was witnessed so I believe it happened, as do many others. Keith was an unusal and interesting man who had left the publishing scene just before my interest in guns started about 20 years ago. But he was legendary at that point.

Why? I shot my Glock 30 (short barrel .45 ACP) at a 2ft square plate at 300 yards and hit it fairly regular.

    Why what?

I have also heard that Keith cross cut his front sights for hold on at long distances.

why is it hard to believe.

Cross cutting sights sounds like a great simple way to adjust for range.

I used to hunt whitetail with a ruger blackhawk .357.

One killed one at 125 yards.
