DELAND, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Investigators with the Volusia County Sheriff's Office have arrested a man for vandalizing and stealing from several DeLand area churches. Deputies said Adam David Shaw, 28, was responsible for smashing the windows and spray-painting the walls of at least four houses of worship over the course of two recent weekends. Adams is now in custody and faces a long list of charges both from the Sheriff's Office and the DeLand Police Department.
The Sheriff's Office's first church break-in cases were on April 29 when smashed windows greeted employees opening North Kepler Baptist Church at 251 N. Kepler Road and Church of the Holy Presence at 355 N. Kepler Road that morning. The Baptist Church had expletives spray-painted on some interior walls, food items from a refrigerator smashed and dumped all over and a laptop computer missing. The other church had similar damage and a computer was stolen from there, too. When deputies looked for evidence, they discovered fingerprints on broken glass at the Baptist Church.
The Sheriff's Office returned to those same churches on Sunday when it was discovered that they had been vandalized yet again. Mirrors were smashed, food was strewn all about and fire extinguishers had been discharged. But this time the vandal had also struck Seventh Day Adventist Church at 220 N. Kepler Road. The suspect had broken into each church by smashing glass with a heavy object and then seemed to wander around inside causing random chaos.
As the investigation continued, the analysis of the fingerprints recovered from the Baptist Church resulted in a match to Shaw. Deputies found him at his DeLand home Wednesday and charged him for the April Baptist Church incident. They then questioned him about the other incidents. Shaw admitted to striking several churches; however, he had been drunk when he committed the crimes and so had trouble remembering the details of what he did and where he was. A careful review of his actions, though, finally provided enough information to add more charges to his list.
The Sheriff's Office has charged him with five counts of burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, five counts of criminal mischief and two counts of grand theft. The charges relate to a total of five separate incidents at three churches.
The DeLand Police Department has also charged Shaw in at least one church vandalism in their jurisdiction at First Assembly of God, 551 S. Kepler Road. The charges are burglary and criminal mischief.
Another church had been vandalized on Sunday, but so far investigators have not been able to link Shaw to Day Spring Community Church at 902 S. Spring Garden Ave.
