My grandson picked up an odd mauser I can not fiquire out what it is.I cast the chamber and the bullet is a 8mm. but the case measures close to a 308 win. The gun has no markings on the receiver. The bolt face is flat on the bottom like a Spainish mauser. What has he got?
The only thing that occurs to me for a case that measures close to .308 is the Belgian 7.65x53mm cartridge. I think a number of other countries used it too, but the only one I can think of now is Argentina.
If it's got a square-bottom bolt face then it's one of the 1893/1895 variants. Pics will definitely be needed to give more of an ID.
I don't recall any of the 93/95 family that were chambered or rechambered for the 8mm except for the Turks. The 8x57 is a tight squeeze through the 93/95 though so I'm wondering about the chambering myself. The Turks were notorious for grinding off original factory markings when they did arsenal rework jobs but usually stamped a Turkish arsenal/date on it's place.
Some years back seems like some Spanish 93 were sold that had been re-barreled to .308. The hardware was also modified and appeared to be a training rifle used rather than the Spanish version of the HK by the military.
