I am very curious about what each of you think is a all around general cartridge for deer / hogs or smaller game and varmint. I know the subject has been hashed over many times so lets add a few items like:
mild to light recoil, 200 yards or less shots, no out of date cartridges( readily available commercial ammo), long or short action OK.

    30/06 THE all around cartridge.
    110/220 gr factory loads.

I have rolled my own with 85 gr varmit loads
  4. +1 on 22's assessment! While one can always come up with a better choice for any individual type of game, nothing will do them all like the old '06!

I have to go with the flow on this one. 30-06 is hard to beat. Next choice would be .308 but IMHO it is less versatile. On shots under 150 yards I use 30-30 or .35 Remington but I just like lever guns.

I, too, would be hardpressed to name any cartridge other than the venerable .30-'06. Also, like Gabob, I use a .30-30 for short-range work.

The .30-'06 will take any big game in North America. It's reasonably accurate and deadly out to 300 yards or more. Its recoil is at the limits of tolerance for most shooters in an average gun. You can load it with sabots to get a decent varmint cartridge. It's easy to find just about anywhere that ammo is sold. As a matter of fact, only one cartridge has taken more deer in North America than the .30-'06 and that's the .30-30.

i woudl go with 4 cartridges, 6mm rem ,6.5 swede, 25 06 and 243, with the 6mm being the best, i chose these rounds because of the fact they would be less destructive to the small stuff. they are also plenty good for all things up to mule deer and down to the bunnies. also , if you had to , the 6mm and the 25 06 will shoot across the canyon.

I shot my first deer with a 30-30, but got my 30-06 when I was nine. I've shot everything from birds to polar bear with it and never felt the need to own a different caliber. Yes, I do have .22s and an 8x57, but those are just for the novelty. When I want the job done, I grab the 03A3. :D
