I have a Pre-64 Winchester heavy barrel target rifle with a serial number 0f 23020 in a 270 caliber. The wood, action and barrel are in very good to perfect condition. I came across this rifle in a gun show a few years back and it was money well spent, It shoots like a dream. Can you give me any information when this gun was produce and what it may have been used for and what it may be worth ?

Judging from the caliber .270 and the serial number of your gun, I can tell you the following: You have a Winchester Model 70 bolt action rifle whch was manufactured during the winter (November or December) of 1939. During that year Winchester produced 6,146 of these rifles. They began production of .270 rifles in 1936 and made them up to 1949. As for value, you state the condition is "very good to perfect." You should know there is one heck of a difference in value between "very good" and "perfect." Now if your Model 70 is actually in perfect condition it has a rough value of about $950. However, in very good condition it is worth only about $500. Now here's the kicker: If you truly have a Model 70 Bull gun with a 28" heavy barrel, the values jump way up to near $2500 for a gun in mint condition, and to around $1250 if the condition is only "very good."
