I have owned a couple of DPMS complete rifles and built several rifles off of stripped DPMS lowers. I have never had any problems with them. All have fired reliably and as accurately as is to be expected from a service rifle that is not "accurized". Also, they are Mil-Spec, so you don't have to worry about aftermarket parts fitting. I would, however, recommend that you get a flat top upper receiver. If you ever decide to mount an optic, it is very uncomfortable on top of a carry handle. The military is even phasing them (cary handles) out.
Optics aren't really much of a problem, the only range that doesn't require me to be a member of a club is about 25 miles out and it is a 100yrd outdoor range so I usually don't use a scope. Anyway, I prefer iron sights.
What you say is true. I am very comfortable with iron sights compliments of Uncle Sam. Just remember one thing. You can but a detachable carry handle or BUIS on a flat top, but you cant put a flat top on a carry handle. I have known many people that, after a couple of years, decided they wanted to add a red dot, etc and had issues with the carry handle. I did the same thing.
I guess I can always bust another $200 on a flat-top upper.
