I'm confused, I have a Remington SpeedMaster 552 Ser. #1439xxx Barrel mark is TT which shows as 1948. The other night I was looking at the Owners Manual on stevespages and it says 1958 was the first year of MFG. Any ideas which one is right?
The 552 didn't start production until '57 (as per Remington's history pages and the Blue Book).
The only thing I can think that would get you a TT marking would be either a double-strike at build time or if the rifle was sent back for repair (which should be offset with repair markings too).
Are both Ts struck neatly inline with each other or are they staggered offset?
That sounds like a fairly high serial # to be an early rifle too so I would suspect it's a mismarked later rifle. Maybe someone has a serial # chart or another 552 to give an age comparison to.
I tried to take pic's with my cheap cell phone but couldn't get them to come out worth a darn. Left side of barrel it has T T 8 and what looks like a sideways apostraphy or sideways 9 or 6 any help identifying the year is appreciated, Thanks.
I found this and called Remington, they told me from the serial # that it's a 1973.
Here's the info, I hope someone else can find it useful too.
OK, for those of you who get tired of the same old "BLACKPOWDERX" answer....Not all Remington Firearms use the "Barrel Code" for serial number location.
REMINGTON (www.remington.com) Customer Service (1-800-243-9700 & follow the prompts) will look up your serial number and verify the age of your firearm. They are VERY helpful and courteous. It took less than a minute to look up my 1973 Model 552.
