Does anyone know when remington started puting the barrel dowel screw on the 572.I have one made in 1958 or 59 that does not have the barrel dowel screw.Iam just curious when and why they added this screw,my guess is to line the barrel up to make the barrel screw easier to put in.

I have one your vintage with out and a 1985 version with one, so somewhere in between. :)

I believe it was added to steady the barrel to the receiver (reduce movement) I had a scope on the '85 version and the screw stripped, the best group I could get was 14" at 25 yds. I replaced the screw and now it is about 3" at 50 yds. The old one without the screw, using iron sights I can shoot a 1.5" group at 50 yds on a rest. go figure
