Again, I must ask, WTF are we doing, at this range?
Shooting paper, people, or just what?
For paper, I can use a .22, with a vld bullet, and look like a hero, with numbers; shooting people, at that range, requires a bit more energy, than it can provide. If we are deathly serious, about the task, I will vote for the.375H&H Improved, with no hesitation, as it just 'does the job', every time.

for that distance three rifles come to mind if you are talking military long range matches.
    1- 1903 or 03-a-3
    3- m1 garand
    3 m14/m1a
    all match tunes of course.

I shot 1000 yard competition with an 03-A3 in the late '40s, early '50s with aperature sight rear, hooded front with ring insert. I was not a national quality shooter, but I did manage to drive the local 'scope shooters nuts. :D

I'd dearly love to have Roy Weatherby's experimental .22 I shot once in '52. Weatherby 30 Magnum case, 120 grain solid copper .22x bullet, loaded with a whole lot of something-hot powder. Had trouble figuring out which end of the rifle was more dangerous, but it poked holes where you were looking at really looooong range. :D:D:D

I am buying a rifle and looking into long-range shooting like this. I am buying a used Rem. 700 in .308 Winchester, with a heavy 26" barrel. Are there any good commercial loads that i could expect decent accuracy with, at 1000 yards?

I know my Mosin can shoot up to 1000 meters and the 91/30 can go, up to, 2000 meters. K98s acn go up to 1000 meters, too. (I love surplus)

If you want to spend (waste) more $, then a good Remington 7xx/7xxx series can do the job, nicely.

while the K31 is a tackdriver (i own 4) i have yet to see one that would shoot minute of angle past 600 yds with iron sights (assuming a human shooter from a sandbagged benchrest and the above referenced ammo)

then again i use 10-20 round groups as my yardstick, its possible i guess to get lucky and place 3 rounds into a sub 1" circle...

    JMHO.

    best regards, mike.

\ I hope I mis understood you, but MOA would be 3, 5, however many holes, at 600, in a six inch group
If that Schmidt Rubin is shooting an inch, at 600, simply name your price!

We regularly shot national match M14's in competition at 600 and 1000 yards in the military, with iron sights. Twenty rounds off the 600 yard line was part of the national match course.

Gunfighter, most of the tactical cops here use the Federal 168gr BTSP, their 'Premium' line; the cops, tho, are seldom shooting as far as 200 yds,in an urban environment.
In a .308, the 190 HPBT, or a 220 HPBT, from Sierra will give excellent results in a 10" or faster twist barrel, my choice for these would likely be 9 1/2", and if I were looking, Bartlein Barrels is a good place to start; I believe their product is as good as all but a very tiny number(less than three), in the business.
Graehaven, the "V" ring on the targets at Perry, at a thousand, is 16 inches; the 600 yd target, and the total black on the 1000, I'd have to look up.
We still shoot 500 meters, BRCR Silouhette, at a 42 " tall ram, with such cartridges as the 40-70, 40-65, 45-70, 90, 110, and some have shot possibles!
Guess you been in the mountains for a while, huh???
I do know that a guy I soldiered with, many years ago, had a 'confirmed' one shot kill at 1380 yds, and this I am sure of, because it was measured with a transit, by me.
.50 cal, BMG, in a VERY expensive, bolt gun, but the NVA Colonel's head came plumb off!
This guy could have beat Tubbs, 40 years ago, with the gear we had then, and, even with todays gear for Tubbs, likely would wax his backside, were he still alive.
The magic is in the wind, and the mirage, and the reading, holding, clicking for it, once you get out past 400.
I know some old guys, 70's and 80's, whom I know better than to bet against, because they read conditions like you or I might read a menu, only quicker! I pray someday to be half as good, for this is the soul of long distance accuracy.

    lets clarify things...

we are looking for a rifle that will:

put 20 rounds into a 10" or smaller circle (MINUTE OF ANGLE or better) at 1000 yds...

dont include the shooter in the equation, lets talk strictly about the shooting platform.

the MOSIN NAGANT 91/30 SNIPER RIFLE will not meet the above referenced specification even if bolted down and using custom handloads...

the M1-D will not do it either...

i dont believe the K31 SCHMIDT-RUBIN would make the cut...

all 3 actions might make suitible platforms for custom built rifles that could do it...

but in there stock, as issued configuration under the most perfect conditions none of them can rise to the challenge.

    best regards, mike.

I have been shooting a sleved XP-100 with a jewel trigger and a 30m inch Schneider 30 cal barrel with a 13 trist. It is chambered in 308 and it is a 1/2 minite rifle. I once shot a 150-13X prone at 800. Thats 13 xs out of 15 shots and the other 2 were 10s. My best 1000m rifle is a 6.5X284. It a blueprinted sleven Rem 700 with a Kenyon trigger and a double froozen 30 inch Krieger 8 tiwst barrel. I am confident it will hit a 4 inch spoter at 1000. Well in a no wind condition on a bench I think its a 5 inch 10 round gun.
Last year the winning long range carterage was a 6mm. Tubbs has his own 6XC casses made and he was shooting a 115 gr Sierra bullet in I believe a 7.5 twist. The rifle I hope to bring to my number 1 XC rifle and long range rifle is a 40X with a 30 inch Obermeyer barrel chambered for a 6X22-250. We will see. So far groups are just ok.

I've had a Rem 700 in .308 for some while... it works well for me however I'm in the process of purchasing a SIG Blaser R93 Tactical 2 that I believe will do what you're looking for. I purchased 2 chamberings for it .308 & .338 Lapua. The .338 I plan to use for the longer ranges. I like the SIG because it is so modular. Just MHO.

Graehaven, the 10 ring at 600 yards is 12" and the 10 ring at 1000 yards is
20". Sorry for the long delay in replying.

if you want to go nostalgia look into a Shiloh or a Davide Pedersoli Sharps in 40/70, or 45/70... if you like the tactical approach look into a rem. M24 .308 or a Win. M70 stealth2 also in .308, and if you just want a rifle that can punch holes accurately at 1000 yds and still have enough energy to punch through a 1/2" plate of steel then look into one of the many .50 BMG rifles availabe. i myself like the ways of the old, having a 45/70 and a SMLE .303 that i regularly compete with, as well as hunt with...
