My brother bought this rifel at an auction a while ago. I have no idea what it is...
It has a bayonett (sp?) that works fine. Bolt action. It looks to be in fairly good shape. I do not know the last time it was fired, so i don't know if it even works.
I would like to find out as much as i can about this gun. Any help would be appreciated. The serial number stamped in the side is: 25798. Thanks!

Here are some pictures of it...

The pics of the markings don't show up.
If it has crest on the top front of the receiver get a pic of it.
    It's Mauser of some kind.

    Isn't that an Arisaka?

Straight bolt handle, chrysanthemum (SP?) stamping, asian characters below it?

Could be I can't see any of the mrakings from the pics.

That would make it an Arisaka

    ok thanks a lot...
i uploaded the pictures to a new host so hopefully they show up now.

If it is an Arisaka then does anyone know what the ammo size is?

    And any ideas on value?

    Thanks a lot.

Dropped into my local gun shop today. They had the identical rifle in the same condition for sale for $195.

That looks to actually be a Type 44 cavalry carbine with a folding bayonet intact with all proper markings. Arisaka you bet. Only about a $500 to $600 gun in the book. The T44 is chambered in a 6.5x51R not the later 7.7x58mm. This is the only model I know of with a production folding bayonet also the 19" barrel designates carbine instead of the M38 or M99 combat rifles.
