Are the romanian SKS any good? Classic Arms has them for $150. They have the milled receiver with the barrel thats threaded into it. They also have the blade bayonet.
I read somewhere one time(years ago) about things to watch out for when it comes to the SKS, but I can not recall what it was. About the same time was the only time I have ever held and inspected one.
Is there a better made sks(Russian) thats still c & r?
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Romanian SKSs are every bit as good as the Russians IMHO. Pay the extra $10 for hand select, and they will be VG-EX, all matching with the blade bayo. My only complaint is the reddish brown wood, which is kinda ugly. But they function FINE, and are nice and solid. Threaded barrels, milled trigger assembly, just like the Russkies.
Mine has a crappy trigger, but it works just fine.

Polishshooter is right - they are well made, threaded barrel, good metal work, but the wood in the stocks - eh, what can I say. I would likely take the Romanian over the Chinese.

One of the vendors at the Wentzville show had a very nice one made in 1958 that was matching for $169.95. I would have bought it if I did not already have one of that year.
They are very good.

I see a lot of 58's around. I would like to find a matching 57. That year and the 1960 are supposed to be the lowest production years.

The funniest thing is a few years ago NOBODY thought there WAS such a thing as a Romanian SKS...these were supposedly made for the Police, or border guards, which is why they are in such good shape, not abused in "field" service.

Just my luck. I called Classic arms today and they are sold out of the SKS. Anyone know of any other good sites that sell to c&r holders? I have the following:
SOG
Century
AIM
Wholesale Guns & Ammo
Classic Arms

They are getting to be in short supply - I was actually suprised when you said Classic Arms had them. Try J&G sales out west in Prescott, AZ 928-445-9650, or web site www.jgsales.com

SOG is POR, but last I checked they were $159.95...pay the extra $10 for hand pick and you should get one as good as I got from them, for close to what you were planning to spend from Classic.

J&G has them at $189.95 - I would definately go with SOG if they have them still. I was suprised at the $150 at Classic - guess that is why they sold out fast.

SOG does not have any listed on their site, I'll give them a call tomorrow when they are open. If nothing else I'll get one of them mas 49/56, I've had my eye on one of them for awhile now.
As for J&G I could not find any in the 189 price range. I did a search of the site under sks and found a NORINCO and some that were Russian made. AH well if SOG does not have any I'll keep looking.
Here is the link to classic arms, the rifles are still listed there for $149.95 www.classicarms.org/

If you are serious about getting a Romanian SKS, and nobody else has them, I would call J&G. Their prices do normally run a little higher, but I have found they often squirrel away some items in their warehouse, and they will still be available when the other distributors have dried up. On their web site, they have two lists of rifles, one of the lists is a limited number of available guns (close outs, trade ins, etc.) which I think you looked at, then under their on-line store section, they list the stocks of current stocked items - I believe the later is where the Romanian SKS rifles are listed.

I called SOG and they told me that they do not have any SKS's in stock and will not be getting anymore in. The people there were so nice, that I could not help myself and I ordered a MAS 49/56 and a CZ52. Now I'm broke and how should I break the news to my wife about the new guns? I do have a birthday coming up so maybe I'll try that tactic.

Well, I guess then I'm too late...just got back from our of town, and got the "Clearview Investments" new flyer...they list three grades of Romanian SKSs, all matching except stock, with only % of finish variance, $139.99, $149.99, and $159.99...
