Gentlemen,
I enjoy firing my Ruger 10/22 except for the, Bolt Release. What were they thinking?? The worst is that when I finally get my wife to the range she has great fun until she has to deal with that release. Ruins the day!
Does anyone have a sketch or explaination on how to DIY modify the Ruger part to achieve the Automatic Release feature. I bought two Ruger replacements and the reviews on the part, 944561, at Midway USA claim that it is really simply with a Dremel Tool or hand file. I printed a copy of the Power Custom, Auto Release, part and I think that I have figured out the difference but wanted to check here first. Is there a gunsmith online?
Thanks,
Danjet500,
Thank you for your prompt reply. I should have known that Youtube would have a how to video. It looks simple enough. Have you done the modification and if so, do you think it worthwhile. Has it ever malfunctioned?
Thanks,
I have done it on my 10/22. It is really simple... taking it out of the trigger pack and putting it back in takes just about as long as actually doing the modification. It works just the way they say it will and has never failed on me.
Thank you for your reply. It's encouraging. I watched a few videos and one demonstrated that if you only pull the lower-front pin out half way you don't even have to remove the magazine release assembly to get the bolt release out of the triger group. I've decided to do the modification and then test, test, test.
Thanks,
I have bought several of the Power Custom Extended Automatic bolt releases. They are only about 14 dollars.
This way, they are automatic release and also they extended the part that comes down that you press on to lock it with, which is great for my gorilla hands.
I'm usually not brave enough to take out my dremel to any of my gun parts, chain saw blade yes,.. but since I have 3 or 4 of these old stock parts laying around, I will experiment on one of these that way if I mess it up I won't be out anything.
dbcooper,
I am familiar with the Power Custom product. That is my fall back solution. I'll give this Ruger part modification a try and may even buy a PC part when I order next from Midway USA. I've wondered why Ruger has not incorporated the Automatic Bolt Release? They certainly have had enough requests and time to do it. I'm a techie and therfore am always wondering, Why.
I love your name and avatar. Years ago there was a good restaurant in Nashua, NH called D B Coopers. They had a parachuting dummy hung from the ceiling over the bar!
Thank you,

Thank you again. It was as easy as you claimed it would be to complete. I did not work the first time but it did with a little more filing. Works really neat now.
Thanks,
Glad it worked out for you. I looked at the ones you can buy, but I'm a tinkerer and would much rather do it myself than just buy something. It was so quick and easy.
If you are a tinkerer, google "10/22 jb weld trick". Another easy modification to remove some of the trigger take-up on the 10/22.

Thanks again. I am not a welder but luckly have a buddy that has all the equipment. I will watch the, Weld Trick, and consider doing it. I'm off to fire the 10/22 tomorrow. Just love the Auto Bolt Release vs the original system. FYI, 22 rimfire ammunition is becoming more available in the New England area.

Caution!
I write this follow up response to say that my Auto Bolt Release continues to work fine but be very careful about hitting the butt plate on the ground as a good whack will release the bolt! The rifle has never fired after the bolt went to battery but it does provide a scare!
Beware, and please pass this allong to fellow shooters,
Thanks,
