i knew my dad had a .22 pistol... i remembered it from when i was a kid, i just went diging for it in the closet because i brought 4 of my guns home for the holidays in hopes to take the family to the range... i found his gun and its a ruger single six... i looks to be a really nice machine and it is a .22/.22mag convertable. any opinions on this gun? o and it is only single action.

Opinion? I have 2 of them.
An old 3 screw, and a new model.

These are what I always take to the range, to start with, when I am teaching a "new" lady shooter about firearms. While the grips are a little small for me, they usually fit the ladies just fine. Recoil is minimal, accuracy is fine.

For the REALLY scared ladies, I stick some "22 shorts" in it to start with. Does not take long until they are asking for more. ;) :D :D

You got a good handgun, hang on to it.

The "Single" in Single six means single action.

I have a new one and love shooting it. As with all my handguns, it is more accurate than I am. I have two problems with my single six. (1) I don't have enough range time to fully enjoy it, but it seems to find its way into my range bag each trip. (2) Like peanuts, one is not enough. The single six may be the only handfun I'd buy another, identical one.

Buy a brick of .22's and have a ball at the range with it.

The .22 handgun my wife loves to play with is a Colt Police Positive (double action) but she always cocks the hammer to fire single action, for accuracy, so do I for that matter. If it was your dad's and it an older model (three screw) it will hold a good value. Take good care of it.

does three screw refer to the 3 flathead screws in the right side of the gun? cause it has those.

I bought a Ruger "Old Model" Single Six, back in March '07. Its a 22lr/22/mag convertable. Paid $170 for it, had offers from others to buy it for $300 plus. I was going to retire the gun, thinking it was a 50 year old (Its really 40 or so years old) revolver. After talking to a Gun Dealer/ Gunsmith/ Collector......I have decided to keep shooting the gun. Its to much fun to sell it, let alone retire it. Where it would sit in a case, collecting dust. I don't like the idea of owning a gun and not be able to shoot it.

IMO the Ruger Single-Six is the best single-action .22 revolver ever made. Enjoy it.

Have one in stainless. Bought it used with few miles on it. After I shot it for a while, I realized why. Must have been a Monday or Friday gun. Took it to a gunsmithing class I took at MCC in NC with Ron Powers. Went through the whole gun and sorted it out. What a nice gun.
Polished it up with Mothers Mag and Aluminum polish. Came out real nice.
    Good luck!
