From descriptions and a few photos I found on the net I have what appears to be a Savage Model 20 in .300 Savage. I have read that they were made starting in 1920 however the patent dates on my barrel are from 1916 with the newest date being June 1919. Also in a photo I saw the receiver was marked Savage Model 20 above the serial # however my rifle has no such model # anywhere, the serial number is in the high 4000.

So would an early model 20 have a Patent date of 1919 and be missing the model # from the receiver? And in general what kind of value might it have in nice condition.

    RJD,

I have one of those in 250-3000. Great rifle! Should have been more successful than it was.

Some were marked with the model number on the left side of the receiver ring, some were not. Mine isn't either, SN 1982.

These were made from about 1920 to about 1928 or so. An improved model with somewhat heavier stocks and a slightly swept back bolt handle was introduced before they went out of production.

The barrels were probably Model 99 barrels. I'm convinced mine is. Same barrel roll stamp as a Model 1899 E on mine.

There were only about 10 to 12,000 of these made so they do have collector value. Check ********* for current idea about value.

Thanks for the info. I think it is a very nice looking rifle and am looking forward to running a few rounds through it :)

They were manufactured from 1920 through 1931. They are good little rifles. I own one chambered in .250-3000 Savage (.250 Savage).

Value for your rifle will vary between $900 and whatever ($0).
