I was recently gien a Savage Model 29 with octagon barrel and a Lyman rear sight. The stock and foregrip are checkered. Serial number is 140115. Anyone have any idea what year this was made? The gun has some rust. I would love to clean it up and shoot it.
There isn't much printed about the Savage rimfires. The Savage Model 29, if this is truly what you have, was the first catalogued version of the Model 29 with the 29A and the 29 B following. All of the 29's had octagon bbls, some of the 29A's did, and none of the B's did. These are nice rifles and deserve to be cleaned up an shot. Don't use any ammo but standard velocity or target loads. The bolt lock up on the 29 is weak and won't sustain regular use of HV ammo. The 29A is a different design and will handle the HV OK.
Certainly made between 1929 and WW II. Probably before 1935.
Then it is a Model 29. You may notice that the bolt locks at the front of the bolt. Every other 22 pump Savage made except this model locked in the back. In the 29 A and B they went back to that method. Other models they made were the 1903(Clip mag) 1909(clip mag), 1914, 25 and then the 29's.
Thanks so much for the info. It's not every day someone give you a gun this old that can still be shot. I need to have someone check it out and help me with the rust on the exterior.
Be sure to remove and clean the safety. I bought one CHEAP once that was in non working condition. All that was wrong w/it was the safety was junked up and frozen in safe mode.
