So if someone armed with other than a 1911 causes trouble what do you do? Whack them with your war club?

FWIW, I believe it comes down to caliber first, gun second. For me the best is the 40 SandW. I have a couple of Glock 23s as back up for my home defense primary: 20 ga with 3 Buck.

Carry is a separate issue for me. I am not content with trigger safeties so I do not carry Glocks albeit I carried them 20 years on the job with no accidents.. Also, it is generally too warm here (fl) for outside the wasteband hosters. So, I most often carry a 380 Bersa with Corbon 90s, Cancealed Carry model, in my pocket...in cooler weather I carry a Smith 66 2.5in with 38+ps. There are smaller and more powerful handguns than the Bersa but I find I shoot that one the best.

In all cases, the most important issue is rounds on target so practice a lot with whatever weapon you choose.

There is no need for war clubs. When other weapons see the 1911 they bow, as servants before a king. Therefore, the fight is over before it begins. ;)

I have 3 Glock 40's (22,23,27) for carry and for home defense. I prefer the 40 S&W round because it flies at 9mm rate, with a larger round. Mass x velocity is a formidable combination. I load the 40's with CorBon 135 HP (1325 ft per second). There is a reason the Glock 22 is the most widely used pistol by law enforcement.

However, I did just purchase a new Springfield Loaded 1911 to replace my old MilSpec that I gave to my son.

Sounds like a Glock 19 would fit your bill perfectly.

    Ruger Sp 101 with a 3" Barrel - Stainless Steel and .357.

    Concealable, powerful and ultra-reliable.

The Bersa .380 is a good, reliable, inexpensive and accurate firearm. But right now ammunition is scarce.
My pocket carry is a Kel-Tec .32 with an extra 10 round clip(Texas hot weather).

some rainy days i check out whats behind other things and find something 'new'.

or put the 9mm bbl in the cz52
    or make the sig 40 into a 357 sig or a 9
if my mood be foul, perhaps the 40 top on the p-11

take out my j-frames and swap the grips around

...life is good....life is fun...till the wife gets home....

Not the cheapest - but you get what you pay for
Kahr PM9 loaded with Hornady Critical Defense ammo. Because of the ccw issue. If you want a great Range gun and are large framed enough to conceal a full size 9 The FNP9 can't be beat

Did your friend say why his Glock is too hard to take apart? I personally find it to be the easiest in the world. Now the 1911 gives me fits but I am working on it.
I carry the Ruger LCR 38 sp +P as it is light but doesnt kick too hard, is easy to conceal and is (hopefully) powerfull enough to do the job. I sometimes also carry the Ruger LCP .380 as a back-up to the LCR. When the weather cools down in SW Florida, I will carry my 1911 .45. Big Steve, I hope that you find the right weapon for you.
