    BlackGun - a few more points to add - take a self defense class - learn how to use a weapon and take time to practice, practice, practice. Other things one can do - if you are wearing high heels (you know the ones you don't see that much anymore - with the stiletto heels) stomp them in their foot - if you're athletic enough a kick to the side of the knee with a stiletto heel will most likely break their knee cap.

    As for not closing places - well today was my last day of cleaning and instead of going late at night which I normally did on a Sunday I went early and have been home for almost 2 hours now. No cleaning at night ever again for me.

    Many cops and so forth argue that you should allow yourself to be raped and not fight back - but fighting back gives you the chance to collect evidence and quite possibly get away before the perpetrator can actually do the deed - the cops say the man will be more likely to hurt you or kill you if you do scream, struggle, hit, run and the like - but from what I've found out by the community of women is they are just as likely to hurt and/or kill you if you do nothing.

    Watch what you do and how you do it - if you are walking to your car - have your keys in hand (in a fist) with one of the keys sticking through - if nothing else you will not be fumbling for your keys and it can become a weapon.

    ps - BlackGun, thanks for the post!!!

    Hey, I was wondering if any of you ever took a NRA "Refuse to be a Victim " class? Maybe they teach some of that stuff in that class. I really think most of us are just too careless when it comes to defending ourselves and our familes. I think we just get to feeling too secure. Every once in a while on the news here I see someone murdered because some pervert just walked into their unlocked home and killed them. Sad.

    If a woman being attacked can vomit on her assailant it highly unlikely that the attack will continue. However, it's not wise to practice this too much.

    Good points, all valuable! I agree with taking a class, everyone should take the time to take a seminar or a self defense class.

    RobertHarden - while I agree about taking a self defense class, I find it hard to believe a seminar would do a lot of good. Maybe it's just me but I've been to those types of seminars and learned little - mostly because one is sitting and being instructed not worked with to get it through so it is retained in ones memory.

    Probably didn't explain that well enough but without some hands on experience we as human beings do not usually retain enough info to do it right.

    Hands on experience is always better no doubt. I think everyone should be in some type of martial arts or self defense, something. I instructed Taekwondo for about 6 years, trained for longer, but some people just don't do that or want to. Those that don't should at least hear about it at a seminar. I learned a couple interesting things just from reading the above. I guess I look at a seminar as informational, nothing more. Anything that is taught for physical defense should be hands on.

    most important thing in self defense

    i have found the most important thing ,besides practice,practice practice ,is never give them a warning ,make it as least noticeable as possible ,never say things like i am trained in {whatever}{made that mistake ONCE} ,if you are being threatened use what ever means you have no matter what the conditions ,kick ,scratch, bite, pull, hair, there is no such thing as a fair fight in the streets here is my personal categories of a fight RULES I LIVE BY

    1 :fair fight :in a ring with a referee

    2:someone is a tacking for whatever reason: i didn't ask for it so your going to get it, by whatever means it takes for me to get you ,i don't care if you weigh 120 pounds i will still hit you with something to make it easy no sense in dragging it on and risk being hurt
    this is were kick ,scratch, bite, pull, hair, comes to play

    3 :you have a ass kicking coming: don't worry you will never see it coming {just hope it is cold to justify the ski mask}

    further more like i said above never announce anything ,they should not know you have a gun until it goes bang
    they should not know you have a knife until it is in them{huhhhhh} he's got a knife}{bang heeeee's got a gun}

    i have found that making some one think you are a easy target ,{once things get started}you have a physiological advantage if they think its going to be easy
    i would rather fight two more than one ,because more than one will expect to win they take their guard down and rely on each other

    Get a medium length strap for your keys, and a heafty keyring to attach it with. A good swipe accross the face with your keys will give any predator second thoughts. Practice swinging it often, to get used to its range. A strap that is too long makes it easier for the predator to grasp and pull away. Because I always carry my keys with me, I'll always have some sort of weapon to use.

    I probably weigh 300 pounds on any given day {225 naked} , the only thing a attacker might and I mean might have going for him is hopefully for him I might get confused at what I want to use on him

    Probably the best word of defense advice:
    "Everything's a weapon"

    Use your imagination. Always use your bare fists as a last resort. Some examples of things that wouldn't be thought of as weapons:

    Newspaper
    If you have a newspaper, roll it up crookedly and very tightly to form a spear point. Simply lunge it into your attacker's stomach or face.

    Compact Disc
    Break one in half and you should end up with a nice, pointy, dagger-like weapon.

    Rope, String, Shoelaces, etc.
    These can be used in a number of ways. One way is to tie a blunt object to the end and swing it at your attacker's face. Another way, if you can, is to wrap a string or whatever multiple times around your attacker's neck.

    Always remember, everything's a weapon!

    Being able to get yourself out of holds is very important in my opinion. Learn everything you can about all the holding moves and how to get out of them.

    Knowing how to use a knife properly for defense is important. believe it or not, it's better to hold the knife's point upwards instead of downwards. If you hold the knife's point downwards, you'll have a lot of trouble trying to lodge it into your attacker's rip cage or stomach. Oh, and be sure you give the knife a couple good twists before you pull it out of your attacker's body. And when "slicing" a neck, don't cut from ear to ear like you see in the movies. All you have to do is simply stab it into the middle of the throat and give it a good twist on the way out to completely sever the attacker's windpipe. Notice, however, that this move is always fatal for your victim if done correctly, as the windpipe becomes damaged beyond repair and your victim will die of suffocation, infection, and/or loss of blood in only a minute or two.

    deadeye - thank you for those nice pointers on weapons. You are so correct that anything and everything can be used for defense.

    Pretty much all that advice assumes you stay around to fight. In most situations, running away is simple and easy. You gotta figure the crook is lazy, that's why he or she is not working for a living or running for congress in Ohio.

    Also, I remember reading about a cop-training facility nearby that brags about the low pass rate on its survival course. The final exam runs the cop through a whole bunch of shoot/don't shoot scenarios, as well as shooting while running, driving, from concealment and in all kinds of positions. In one of the last stages, the testee goes through a building, then gets in an SUV and drives through another stage. This is where the fail, because they invariably jump in and go without looking in the back seat . . .

    I've always found that when fighting a larger opponent. A swift hard punch to the throat area (adams apple area) works wonders.
