Most ranges are in yards, so when they're talking longer ranges, 500yrds = 1500 ft. Pistol ranges are often times in both feet or yards. Most rimfire matches are in yards, 50yrd or 25yrd.

I keep it simple for me and figure everything in yards to avoid confusion for myself.

If you can hit a golf ball at 300' (100 yards) you most likely can hit it at 500' (166 yards) as well.

beth Think about all what you said and try again. 100 feet? Never ever seen a 100 foot range. 100 yards, 300 yards, 500 yards yes. What are you shooting golf balls with, 22lr . Most ranges don't allow shooting at the ground ether. Ricohets are very likely.

I have only been to one gun range the one i belong to so i don't know how other ranges are and what distance. We have a rope across the area with golf ball hanging down from the rope at 300' that is what i shoot at with .22

You range has 300' sign posted? As in feet? Most ranges I've been to have their first sign posted "100", then "200", "300" etc. Not clarifying feet or yards, but yards is almost always used. However, I've been to a range that clarifies meters. 100m, etc. A meter is a little bigger than a yard, I think 90m = 100 yds +/- a few.

Beth, you are using the ( ' ) symbol with means feet to me, I am sort of getting confused, are you shooting at 300 FEET or 300 YARDS?

The good news is that you are 3 times better than you thought you were.

I think that Beth has been shooting on a 100 yard (300') range. But she just saw the "100" sign out there, and she immediately assumed feet.

I'll be real honest; I am terrible at guessing distances. When I moved to the new house here, I set my shooting bench at what I figured was about 100 yards from my backstop, then I got out the tape to measure it. I was only short by about 35 yards.
So while most of you are probably good at recognizing the length of a football field... I'm not. I played football for about 7 years, and I played soccer for about 18. Ever seen the "standard" size of a soccer field? Fifty to 100 yards wide, and 100 to 130 yards long. We tend to be imprecise. ;):D

Beth shooting a .22LR at 200 yds (600 ft.) isnt difficult. But it is challenging. Its all about doping the wind and the elevation. The process fo holding the crosshair on the target and squeezing off a round is the same at any range.

Beth what you shooting. A .22 at 100 yards is better than good for many. That golf ball will be swinging around makeing for a harder target. Centerfire at longer distance in any case, that kind of shooting makes for a darn good shooter. Around here they use to have egg match's. Hang an egg in a blacked out box out to 500 yards.

Yep. Shooting with a 1.5 power scope at a 100 and a 36 power scope at 1000 looks pretty much the same. (assuming mirage actually lets you dial up the power at 1000)
