just wondering about the difference in a winchester supreme 1 3/4 oz shot and the 2oz. shot. what takes up the extra space. Is the wading bigger or is there more buffer?

You are correct in your thinking. It is a different wad that makes the difference.

The wad is the same size, but the "cup" part of the wad is longer, allowing for more shot.

You are correct for most shotshell reloading. However, please notice the WAA12R wad in the picture below. It is not the same size as the other three to its left which are also 12 guage wads. It is not the same size. The cup sizes also makes them different wads as listed by Winchester for the loads desired. Therefore, it is a different wad and not the same with just a cup difference!
