I always assumed it was. It only makes sense. The German and Dutch settlers learned english in the early days of the U.S. when they outnumbered the english speakers in most places they set up shop like parts of Pennsylvania. I don't see why all the imigrants are so against learning english anyway, it is the number one, most spoken language in the world, and I don't know who planted this idea in their heads but learning one language does not make you forget your old one, you can know more than one.

OK how about German........................................................... if not German then I vote for English.
  7. Ja doch, Herr Dawg. Wir sprechen Deutsch einsig! Heute die Vereinigten Staaten, morgen die Welt! :D ;) :p

Seriously, a language is indeed part of the identity of any nation. To dilute or even dissipate that language is to lose that identity . . . which is precisely what is happening in this country today in the name of "cultural diversity."

Each nation should have an official language. Some have several, but it leads to confusion and bigotry.
An equally important question should be what cultural attributes are you transferring to your children? It will always be what did the children receive from the previous generation.
    I voted English of course.

Sackett, Canada has two official languages, english and french, because the French got here about the same time as the English and were pretty well established in Quebec by the time we got around to becoming a country. I don't know if the language is the cause but we have had some problems with the french speaking public over the years. Do some research in to the FLQ, think IRA only on North American soil and without quite as many guns. Nowadays there is a major group in Quebec which wants to separate from Canada, become a sovereign nation but still fall under the protection of our military and use our currency. One of their major platforms is how french is under-represented in Canada even though it is law that every product label on a product sold in Canada has to include both languages.
