A little less "ow"; but it all depends on the weight of the cartridge.

    A 30/06 shooting a 180 gr. has about the same "ow" as a .280 (7mm) pushing out a 165 gr.

Keeping all factory loads; the 30/06 shooting a 220 gr cartridge definately has more "ow" than the .280.

    Balistics tables.

    Bottom line:
Only your shoulder knows. These guys are pretty close.

My personal favorite is the .270 Winchester. All kinds of factory loads for different scenerios. The"ow" is manageable.

    I use a .280 rem., a stainless Ruger 77, with a Bell & Carlson carbalite stock and a Leupold VX III 4.5x14 scope for deer, its probably my favorite rifle, i wouldnt take any thing for it. I have a .270, a .243, three 30-06s, three .223s, a 22-250, a 25-06,a .338 win. mag., two 300 ultra mags., a .260, a 45-70, a .284, and a 30 gibbs. When it comes deer season i grab my trusty 280.

How is a 270 vs 30-06 in recoil as in a savage edge in 270 vs a winchester model 70 super grade in 30-06

    Lost in SW USA.
If you want to go smaller with less recoil then a 308 is not much different than a 30-06. If you really want to notice a difference then go 7mm-08, or 25-06, or even the 243 and Rem 6mm.

I always loved my 30-06. I have degenerative dics desease now and the doc said I had to give it up. I went down to the, .243 and fell in love all over again. With correct bullet placement, it knocks the snot out of a whitetail. Lastweek I killed a big 10 pt. 204 lbs. One shot to the lungs. He only went 30 yards and dropped dead. Right now I'm loading, SierraGameKing 85gr. BTHP w/ 40grs. IMR 4064. The deer rarely go more than, 25-30 yards.
