I've run across a pretty good deal on some 7.92x57 ammo. Romanian military surplus made in the 1990s. But it's steel cased ammo. I'm wondering if it will be ok to shoot steel cased ammo in a 1940 mfg K98k (bearing in mind that the rifle is in excellent condition). Any help would be greatly appreaciated.

Almost all mil-surp I have seen has been steel cased. I use it in my M48A and have had no problems but I suggest it should be treated as corrosive primed.

Thanks for the info. I also found some brass cased 8mm from the same source that's not quite as cheap (but still a great deal). I'll probably get it next week after I get paid again.

Steel cased Romo is good ammo, bought about ten cases to stash when it was 49/cs. It's corrosive, wash with water then Hoppes and oil it. What is the brass stuff, Yugo? Another excellent 8mm ammo.
I have shot / shoot Romo steel in my 98K rifles, M48s, 24/47s and clean them, and they are fine. Don't forget, that rifle you have made in the 40's..... all they shot was corrosive back then, and Germany made steel cased ammo during WWII. And the condition of your bore is.....? Excellent? Clean it with water and it will not matter, wash the salt out.
