I bought a M1895 straight pull rifle a while back. The exterior is in good condition but the bore is black and pitted. It shoots ok. The problem is that one day I was cleaning it and cycled the bolt back, a bit too hard I guess, and it came right out. I was able to put it back in without any problem, but it works stiffer now. I am wondering, did I ding something up when slamming it back too hard? I can find nothing wrong with it, so it is a bit puzzling. Any suggestions? Thanks.

When you installed the bolt, did you pull the bolt head all the way forward until it stayed, then carefully insert the bolt into the receiver?

If not, remove the bolt and re-install it as above.

Yes I did. I examined the bolt and found nothing wrong then put it back in. Maybe it had a very good lube or something on it when I bought it and I wiped it off. But for whatever reason, it does not cycle as slick as it did before. It is still useable though.
