I was shooting at 4H Shooting team practice and the smoke coming from the rifle had a strange smell. It was kind of like a bitter/sour sort of smell. I know when I shoot my rifle with my ammo the smell isn't there. Is it something in the ammo or is it the rifle.

P.S. I have a Ruger 10/22 and in 4H I am currently shooting a Savage boltaction, not sure what exact model it is. Not sure if that would make a difference.

They use remington oil wipes, other than that I don't know for sure.

Has to be the lubricant. That is unless you are Paris Hilton driving down the road with a motorcycle officer behind you....... :=)

Ely primer compound smells kind of hinky. It's used in several different brands of ammo so I would look to see what you were shooting. Oil in the gun would dissipate pretty quickly and gun type or brand will have zero to do with this.
