Posting a photograph would help a lot. Taurus has been exporting revolvers to the US since the 1950's. The early ones were very rough and poorly thought of. In the 1980's, they did a complete overhaul and their quality increased very markedly. They have been quite popular from that time on.

I for one don't know enough about them to recognize what period yours is from just by your (admittedly quite complete) description. Maybe others do, but a picture would get you faster & better results. That's just my $.02, of course.

I called Taurus. It is a model 80. It is not designed to shoot +P ammo. It was manufactured 20 to 25 years ago.
The model number is found on the frame, after the cylinder is opened, just above the hinge pin.

Huh. I would have thought from the style that it was over 30 years old; I did not think Taurus as making guns like that as late as 1987. It's a good thing you called!

Taurus quality control has been spotty, but if the gun you have works OK, it is a pretty good gun.

Value is around $150, maybe $200 if the condition is as good as it looks.

It is purely a using gun; there is no collector value.

The condition is better than it looks. It has spent it's life in a drawer beside my Dad's bed, until yesterdy. But I don't know when my Dad bought it. I do know he died in November 1990. My stepmother opened the drawer so I could see it shortly after he died. She gave me all of his guns then, but kept this pistol.
