from a friend of WAGC's who is a lawyer in Utah:Subject: Teach the Children

    Compatriots,

I was asked to teach a class on gun safety at my church. I did
so last night. They acknowledged being fed "anti-gun" crap in school
although from their description, it is not nearly so bad in Utah as in
    other states.
Now they want me to take them shooting, which I will. Once they
have had a chance to picture themselves protecting themselves and their
families with a firearm, the way our Founding Fathers envisioned it, it
will be hard for their high school teachers and college professors to
    twist their minds.
Plus, I'm convinced, after handling several accidental shooting
cases, that the best way to prevent accidental shootings of youth is
(yes education, but better yet) to SATISFY THEIR CURIOSITY about guns.
Let them KNOW THEY DON'T HAVE TO SNEAK A PEEK at a gun, but rather just
ask a trusted adult to take them shooting (and better yet, rabbit
hunting so they can see what a bullet really does as opposed to what
    they see on TV/Movies).
So do what Pancho says: "Preserve our freedom into the next
generation; take a kid shooting!" (But don't forget to use the "Parent
Consent Form" Appendix A in my book).

    This is very important.

If we don't teach them, who will???? All five of mine were shooting with me before they went into first grade and all remain loyal second amenders and hunters.

    Thanks for the comments

I agree wholeheartedly. The big buzz phrase these days is "talk to your kids about.... (fill in the blank)". Parents are expected to talk to their kids about drugs and sex, but no one is telling parents to talk to their kids about guns. Just like a parent should sit down and tell his/her kids about what sex is and when/where it is appropriate, I think the gun issue should be brought up as well. Better yet, take them shooting.

I disagree, however, with the notion of taking a kid out to shoot rabbits just for education. That might send the wrong message. I don't think it's right to just arbitrarily kill animals for fun or education. Take the kid deer hunting instead, so that they learn that when you shoot an animal you do something useful with it. Otherwise, the kid just learns that shooting animals is pure entertainment.

    Excellent point, Sniper.

We need to inculcate not only gun use with safety and for our protection, but also the basic rule that one doesn't take life of any creature without good reason, i.e., intending to use it for food, ridding an area of a dangerous and foreboding animal or other legitimate basis.

Sniper, I'll take my kids out to shoot rabbits. Then we'll take the rabbits home, clean them, tan the skins (with fur on) for use in our medieval reenactment hobby and cook the meat and enjoy some good eating! And the kids will each be carrying around a lucky rabbit's foot charm that's much more meaningful than a store-bought one. There's plenty of ways for a dead rabbit to be useful!

I have no problem with that. I just meant that we shouldn't be teaching kids to shoot at random animals just for the heck of it.
