Let's start off the New Year stirring the pot a little.
What was the greatest weapon of all time?
No fair saying the human brain or hand.....has to be an actual weapon.

It cannot be narrowed down to a single weapon. The correct answer is all the guns that JMB invented and the guns that are still being made based upon his inventions.

have to agree with machine gun, and as for JMB - right now cnn.com has a pic on the main page, looking out the crew chief / gunner's window on a helo (CH53?), over a 60-yr-old design (!) M2 .50 BMG
Maybe a tie for first with strike aircraft - another weapon that produced sweeping changes in warfare.

Fred, I think you're going in the right direction.
My vote is for a sharpened stick....the spear! It allowed man to defend himself, one-on-one, from dangerous animals, and allowed him to kill larger game to feed a growing population.
It led to the spear with a stone tip, which led to bow and arrow (a short spear with feathers), the crossbow (a short metal spear), and the firearm (a metal spear tip propelled by gunpowder).
On the other hand, Fred.....your choice merely led to politicians....a bunch of asses who jawbone a lot!

In my Navy experience, the M1 rifle was accurate and reliable. It could get a second aimed shot off quickly, if needed. The lack of full automatic fire reduced the temptation to miss with an entire magazine instead of hitting with the first shot.

The price of original M1's is skyrocketing at gun shows. It seems like ever since the movie Saving Private Ryan came out in '98 that the price of them has gone up big-time. I'm lucky that I inherited one.
