I got this in a email this morning and thought it was worth passing along. I had no idea that the US military's five gallon gas can (the Jerry Can) started out as a secret weapon!
That is a great read, George. I always knew them as "Jerry cans" but never thought about it. Not too sure I'd want to use them for drinking water after they were used for gasoline, though. I live on a farm and carry 1 or 2 of them in the bed of my truck always, secured with bungee cords. Only way I can bring fuel for the old tractor back from town.
Yes, because the same type of " Jerry" Cans were used for petrol and fresh water, there was a danger of consummation. It happened to the Marines in WWII several times [ to supply the Marines on the beach, the Navy used empty gas cans for fresh water with out cleaning the cans ]. As a result, those cans used for water are painted white or marked in white, those for gas painted red or marked in red and they are not allowed to be cross used.
Oh yeah, I forgot that they don't meet California safety standards so you can't get new ones here anymore.
