Thinking of getting a Walther P22 for one my daughters, she doesn't like bigger caliber guns and has taken a shine to my S&W Model 41 (not going to happen) so I thought a P22 might be an inexpensive alternative for her. She is an occasional shooter unlike her younger sister who is at the range every week. any feedback or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. including any other .22 brands
I've had one for about 5 years now. I really enjoy it. Some have some little issues (usually feeding issues) but most times they are worked out after you break the gun in. The only thing I don't like about it is the extractor. It doesn't consistently eject the same direction every time and some of those times can be back at you. It doesn't hit you hard but the brass is still hot and if it goes down your shirt or in my case landed between my shooting glasses and my brow, it can burn. Its not every time and you could shoot 100 rounds and never have it happen but every now and then it will happen. There is a way to refile and angle the extractor to prevent this but I never bothered.
For a first semi auto gun its a good choice b/c its one of the few that is actually designed like most centerfire semiautos.
Im probably not the one that should be replying to your post, I should probably let my daughter give you her thoughts instead. I purchased one for her and gave it to her for her birthday about two months ago. It is her first hand gun, and what I really liked about the P22 is the design, as it is the same as most normal automatics. Since then, we have put about 400 rounds through it, with only a couple of FTF very early on, I don’t think we have had one in the last 200 rounds or so. Probably just some break in stiffness. As far as the eject problem that Helix_FR mentioned, it is a bit sporadic, and can surprise her if she isn’t paying attention. She learnt the fist time to the range not to wear a low cut shirt to the range. I really cant say much about the operation of it, since I haven’t had a chance to shoot it yet, I cant get it out of my daughters hands! I can however tell you that there is a real happy 13 year old on the space coast of Florida!! If I had to do it over again, I would in a heart beat.
I was at the range 3 times per week for 2 years. 500 rounds per trip . . . so
500 x 3 x 104 = 156,000 rounds through my Walther P22
I have replaced the extractor, a barrel, and a couple recoil springs. But to me that is normal wear and tear.
I let noobies shoot this one at the range, and everyone seems to love it.
My GF has currently taken it over because she loves it so much.
My only complaints are the rearward ejection and it is a little picky on ammo. Anything high velocity will work, but lower velocity ammo is 50/50 chance if it is gonna work.
I decided to buy the SP22 M3, because of it`s longer barrel and the P22 is less accurate, i think.
The Sp22 is a little sensitive on munition, but you can shot hole in hole with it.(On 25m)
Hi! I got a Walther P22-Target. I belive the P22, for a woman, is a good gun - always inside .22lr cal. The grip is in right "female hand" size, "one hand" safety, is "soft" to cock, not heavy to carry, slim gun, shooting accuracy : 1; double magazine - 1 for small hands & 1 for "larger" hands (look at the pics). Nice pistol; inside .22lr class : +1!
I bought a P-22 for my wife a few years ago, although I am the one that shoots it all the time. It is an OK pistol, lighter but not as accurate as my buckmark. The safety operates the opposite of most pistols, down is safe and up is fire, this lead to confusion one time at the range for me. The front sight has also popped off a few times. This is not an uncommon experience from what I hear and the company recommended that I glue on the replacement that they sent to me for free.
The small thin barrel has threads on it that holds on a barrel sleeve. There are adaptors available for mounting silencers that cost about $40. The sights are high enough to see over a silencer that is 1 inch wide. With a silencer on, it is not quiet, but tame enough to shoot without hearing protection.
I would recommend the Buckmark or Ruger unless she has very small hands.
