Recently bought a commemoritive government model Colt .45 ,gold plated that I thought would be a 19121. Instead it is a mod 1991??????? Who ever heard of a 1991?

Don't worry, your still accepted in the 1911 group. Same function just some extra safety features.

The worst part is that commemoratives rarely if ever return the money invested in them. That is especially true of non-factory commems, where some group or other buys a bunch of guns and has them engraved, plated, or whatever, then peddles them in the Sunday supplements. We used to call those "Sunday Morning Specials", knowing that the buyers would never get back anywhere near the money they invested.

Similar "collectors items" were model cars, model steam engines, and the like. They cost a bundle, then showed up in the antique shops for $10 for the set.

Yup, the 1991 is pretty much a Series 80 version (equipped with a firing pin safety) and parkerized version of the original 1911 (not 1911A1) pattern.

    As for the commemorative part...
If it means something to you, then the extra fancying up is worth it. As a collectors item though, that's all subject to whether or not it's worth anything to someone else when you go to sell it. JimK posted a pretty good description of the typical commemorative and how they fare value-wise.
