That is so messed up. The thing I don't understand is why not just turn off the ignition. Are these people really dying because they are stupid?

    Good one!

I can see a SPLIT SECOND of thinking "What the )#$???
But to just sit there stamping on an un-responsive brake after that is just total stupidity.

    Brake fails?
    Hit parking brake.
    Fails?
    turn off key.
    Fails?
    Slam tranny into Park.
    Fails?
Turn off the road into a big field, where the soft ground will slow you down.
Make laps around it until something fails or you run out of gas.

Turn off ignition, steer to side of road. Or, throw it in neutral first and steer off road then turn off ignition. That way you still have power steering and brakes.

Those are the things you think should work, but in an interview with a Prius owner, she said that she tried to put it in neutral and nothing happened (the trans is under a huge load, remember....it takes a ton of force to unmesh loaded gears). Many Toyotas (Lexus) are push button ignition. A push button that tells the computer to start the engine (as stop it too?). She burned her brakes up getting the thing to stop. Hybrid brakes use some of the momentum to recharge itself on decel and braking. IT decides how much braking force you can actually apply.

No direct way to control throttle or ignition and under too much load to knock out of gear = you are along for the ride.

    Ain't technology great?

Funny, I have never heard of turning off an ignition switch and it stayed running. I guess anything is possible.

They didn't want people turning off their ignition b.c then they would loose power steering and no power steering for some dainty people was even more dangerous. Neutral and let the motors burn up.

I found out that the ignition switch will only turn off if you press and hold it for 3 seconds on the Lexus and the higher level Toyotas
