My teen daughter and I are going trap shooting this weekend and I'm wondering which shotgun would be our best bet. I have a 11-48 semi auto .410 with a skeet barrel, a remington 58 12 gauge with both skeet and full choke barrels. I also have a couple of pump shotguns in 20 and 12 gauge, both ithicas.
We went once before with the 20 gauge pump and she did ok with it, but I'm thinking one of the semi autos might be better. Any thoughts on this? The outing will be purely for fun but I do want her to get as many hits as possible.
Also is there different distances that the birds start out from? When we went the first time the birds seemed to start out pretty far (20 yards?) so I'm thinking the modified or full chokes might be best. We were given essentially no instruction by the facility so sorry for the newb questions. Thanks in advance.
Standard shooting positions at trap are 16 yards from the trap house. The clay targets must rise I THINk 16 feet above the top of the trap house, and of course at random angles of flight.
The following is my opinion only. My sons began shooting 20 gauge when they were 12 years old and about 90 pounds. They all decided for themselves that the recoil from a 12 gauge Remington 11-48 wasn't much different than from a 20 gauge, and there was MORE SHOT to hit the target. By choice, one still shoots a 20 gauge double , the others have Winchesters and Ithaca. Actually it depends on the individual shooter but that's my experience. Of course you'll use trap loads with #8 shot. Less recoil with trap loads.
I guess my biggest question is what choke type would be our best bet. She can handle any of the guns, having already shot 1 ounce loads out of a lightweight 20 guage.

I always thought choke was a personal thing. Modiied, improved modified and full choked guns are in most cases a personal preference. Some shooters get on the target quickly, some are a little slower, so meanwhile the traget is moving further away. As others have said, let her try a variety. There was one shooter in our club with an old model 97 winchester that consistently busted clays at 55-60 and sometimes 70 yards. Someone like that is an exception of course. It helps to pattern the gun also.

Why handicap youself, I've ran 100 straight from the 16 with a full choke but I've been doing this for a long time. When I used to shoot more ATA I used a 34" barrel with a Mod from the 16 and a full from the 27.
Yes you are correct with the patterning and as long as the temps are warm #8 is fine in the colder climates I use 7 1/2.
