I've been going thru some left over ammo that belonged to my wifes Grandfather. Most of the ammo is the 'soft point' variety that I am familiar with, however, there is a box of Rem 'bronze point' in there as well.

These have a very pointed bronze cap on the tip of the bullet.

What is the purpose of these? Are they hunting, target, etc.? What is the advantage or disadvantage of the bronze point? The ammo is from the mid '70's if that matters.

Yup, the Remington Bronze Tip (a bronze capped lead core) and the original Winchester Silver Tip (aluminum capped lead core) rifle bullets were designed to keep the bullet tips from getting battered in the magazine from recoil.
