I have a top break five shot 32 with US Revolver smaped on top. IT has a serial no. of 10583. It looks to be in fair shape. Hinge is tiht and barrel only has mild pitting. I would like to rebuild it and blue it as a first serious revolver project. Can anyone tell me the correct dissassembly proceedure. such as mainspring first then trigger mechanisam or of a manual that will give me such info. Also, can anyone tell me what date this revolver was made. Can it shoot modern loads or is it only good for black power loads.

    Thank you

after you take the grips off you will be able to tell if it has a letter code prefix to the serial number found on the left side of the grip frame this is the serial numbr i need to identify.

basically the internal mechanism of the U.S. Revolver is held by four screws and two pins. open the revolver and there will be a tiny screw at the bottom of the frame. this retains the front of the trigger guard. remover grips and puh the hammer spring out. using a punch of the right side drive out the rear trigger guard pin and then the trigger pin, remove hammer screw hammer comes out the top every thing else comes out the bottom.

the u.s. revolver co. top break was made during the smokeless era (after 1909).

Thanks Goforth. The serial no. on the left side of the grip frame has no letter code or prefix. Just the 10583. This no. is also stamped on the bottom of the trigger guard. Noting that this revolver was made in the smokeless era do you think it can stand the pressures of a modern 32 load, provided ofcourse, that the gun is solid. Also, is there a dealer that still privides parts for this revolver.

    Thank you,

I also have an iver arms and cycle works break top 32. It has the company name and address on top rib of barrel. Five patent dates on lower barrel just in front of cylinder and just over hinge pin (screw). It has a serial no. of F33474 on left side of grip frame. This no. is stamped on the inside leg of the frame, not bottom. From what I can tell by infor on your web site this must be a 1903-1904 model. Soun about right.

first the iver johnson is a second model manufactured in 1903 (black powder era). the U.S. serial number 10583 was manufactured in 1910. as long as the U.S. is deemed fireable by a qualified person modern 32 S&W ammo should not harm it. however the second model iver johnson safety automatic revolver was manufactured for black powder cartridge pressures only.
