when using a paper cartridge do you pour in the powder and then use the paper as an overpowder wad? Or do you discard the paper totally? Thanks.

It is intended to be the wad between powder and ball. Some were made to be patch for the ball also. The only part that gets thrown away is the tip you bite off. Although, you can eat that, if you so desire. ;)
