I was given this gun by my father before he died and would like further information on it. It is a 45 ACP and has the military bluing and the original checkered grips. It also has the following patent numbers: APR. 20, 1897. SEPT. 9, 1902. DEC. 19, 1905. FEB. 14, 1911. AUG. 19, 1913. Colt's PT.F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.

What is the value of this for insurance purposes and if I should sell it, how much is it worth.

In all seriousness, it helps answer your question. Plus we want to see it.:D

I would never sell it unless I was in dire need of cash.

Janno, it appears from your pictures that you have a Model 1911 .45 ACP which the grips appear to be aftermarket. The standard wood grips for these would have the "diamond" type checkering. Probably the most common variety of these were made around 1918 and the serial number in the 400,000 range. You might let us know the serial number of your gun, substituting X's for the last two or three numbers and someone here with a list can tell you for sure when it was made If it is a "common" (none of them are really common any more) variety Colt, some refer to as a shooter, then the value at auction would run between $600 and $800. Of course with more info it could run somewhat more than that. If you have the original grips, so much the better. Hope this helps.
