There should be a proof mark on the barrel, visible through the ejection port, the mark should be an Eagle over a crown. The serial number denotes 1940, first use of the Eagle over a crown. Are there any other markings on the PPK? If there are no other markings then it is assumed to be a commercial or private firearm, not military, political or police use. Are there any markings on the magazine?

It has a "Crown" over an "N" on the barrel in the ejection port.
It also has the "Crown" over "N" on the slide just below the ejection port.

It has the Walther ribbon logo on the magazine.

    Thanks, Terry

The Crown/N dates the pistol to, or prior to, 1940, when the proof law was changed to make the proof mark the Nazi eagle. The N indicates Nitro (smokeless powder) proof.

It looks like one side laid in something wet at some time, and lost its bluing. You don't say, but it is probably .32 ACP (7.65mm). If it is .25 or .380, it is worth more.

Assuming it is .32, a nice blue on both sides would make it probably an $800 gun; as it is, maybe $400.

They are beautifully made guns, quite reliable and accurate.

    Jim

It was one of the last series to use the N over Crown so it would date 1939/1940 ( right at the change over )
