Growing up in south GA.,bird hunting was king (bobwhites and doves).I had a.410 first at age 6.My first .22 the next christmas was a marlin/glenfield semi-auto.It looked like a .30 cal m1carbine,but i can't recall the model#.It was new, made in 1966.
When I was a kid worked for my dad and uncle all summer like a dog doing construction. Deal was any gun I wanted...
Reality was October came around they took me to sears and got me a JC Higgens single shot .22 . Still have that POS as a reminder "Trust No One"
New to forum. Does bring back memories. I bought from my Grandfather around 1964 a Remington Model 511 that he bought for $12.50 about 1942. I paid him $10.00. He used for killing hogs, it was kept in the corner of the hog cleaning house, open to the wind and rain all year long. Sill have it and the paper tag that hung on the trigger guard with the price penciled in. Told me he bought it and all the ammo the hardware store had as WWII was coming and he needed it to kill hogs!
My Father's first .22 was a Remington Model 510 which I still have. I think he paid $5.00 for it (second hand) about 1936.
I never owned a .22 until two years ago when I was 53. It's a Winchester 69A that my mom gave me. I now have 18 .22 rifles, and in the last two years I've had about 30 go in and out my door. Talk about a late bloomer.
That would be a Reminton 550-1 semi-auto. I still think it is an awesome 22. You could mix shorts, longs and long rifles in the tube and just keep shooting. Would cycle with cb caps also.

My first .22 calibre given me by my Dad about seventy years ago is a Winchester Model 67 with open sights and a 30" barrel. It is a fine shooter and I still use it occasionally.
mine was a ruger 10/22, when I was 15, Not my first gun, but my first .22 I ended up including it and a couple others on a trade for an AR and never looked back.
My first was a Stevens Favorite in 1954 (when I was 6). My Dad paid 6$ for it. We still have it. My second was a Christmas present from my Uncle. It was a JC Higgens from sears (14.95). It probably shot a thousand jack rabbits. It was very hard for me to afford the price of 22 shells at that time as shorts were 50 cents and long rifles 69 cents. That JC Higgens was one of the most accurate 22's I ever had and it only had iron sights. I've had a very very accurate Remington 541S (great shooter, but looked cheaply made with the plastic magazine and butt plate. I traded it and 200$ for the best quality and accurate 22 I have ever shot - a Model 82 Kimber- in 1982.
A model 49 Ithaca. It was a single shot lever operated. You could shoot shorts, longs, or long rifles. It was a Christmas gift from my dad when I was 10.
JC Higgins from Sears.
Bolt action single shot that handled short, long, long rifle.
You opened the bolt, inserted a round, closed the bolt, then manually cocked it by pulling back on a knob at the back of the bolt before you could fire it.
I bought it new in 1955 when I was 12 with money I earned peddling sassafrass roots and sweet corn on my bicycle.
Within two years, I owned a surplus Jap army rifle and a new H&R 929 .22 revolver, both of which I bought without adult intervention.
Now, at 66 years old, I fill out a ton of paperwork, fingerprints, background check, etc. to buy a .22 rifle, and am escorted off the store property with the purchase by an armed guard.
My first is a Remington Model 514 bolt action single shot .22 rifle. I bought it in the early 1960's and still have it. Paid a whopping $18 for it brand new.
My Dad gave me the same rifle when I was 10 years old...for Christmas.
That was in 1955 or so....I still have it and have put thousands
of rounds through it.
Dad figured that if I had a single-shot, I'd be more likely to get a first round
hit than with a semi...He was right.
Bought a new Rem 51? with a 5 round magazine.
Think it was about $17 new. Next new one was a
Rem 550 for $27. Wish I had them now. Had
some used ones between those two.
The first .22 I bought was a Jennings. I hated that thing. If it fired more than two in a row, it was doing something so I sold it.
I then proceeded to learn about guns and why that first Jennings I owned malfunctioned like it did. Glad I bought another
My first 22LR was a Harrington and Richardson 676 revolver with a 7 1/2" barrel and interchangable 22LR/22Mag cylinders. The worst action and trigger pull I ever had but it taught me to appreciate nicer handguns.
Used Remington 514 with about a 24" barrel that I bought from an uncle for $5 when I was 7. Mama had a fit, but I got to keep it. I didn't get to shoot it on my own for a few years though.
My folks didn't believe in kids having BB guns saying that we'd pick up bad habits with them. We all started out with a 22 instead.
My first .22 that I purchased back in 1974...still have it today along with a .22 Mag cylinder I picked up later. Unfortunately, back then I didn't understand the importance of BOXES!!!

Savage bolt action single shot bought in 1964 at a Coast to Coast Hardware store for $28. I bought a bubba'd Enfield jungle carbine 303 for $18 at the same time, the 22 was a better deal and I still have it. I got rid of the 303 as soon as I found a sucker to take it.
I learned to shoot with that gun and I have lost track of how many I have trained with it.
Thanks for the link ftk for us Okie's, I just signed up on there as well. I am in OKC and always looking for a place to go, as well as people to hunt and fish with.
