I asked for and got some info on the S&W .38 I inherited from my grandfather, but I'm still curious as to what year it was made. Is it possible to tell the year from the serial number? If so, just reply and I will give the number.

HS, we need the model number and any other pertinent information, barrel length, serial no. Hard to tell without this info.

Ok Plano, AntiqueDr. told me it is a pre-model 10, 2 inch barrel, .38 special. It is nickel plated, factory I assume. On the left side of the barrel it says :

    SMITH & WESSON
    38 S.&W. SPC. CTG.

    Serial number is 972xxx

My grandfather bought it when he came back from Korea, I don't know where he bought it, or if it was new when he bought it. The reason I think the nickel is factory is just be cause it doesn't have the "not factory nickle plating" look, if you know what I mean. Lemme know if you need more info, pic is attached.

HS, edit your last post and X out the last three digits of the serial. Now, If you open the cylinder, what does it say on the crane? Does it give a 10-? or no numbers at all? Let me know.

Hydra, sorry for the confusion, but is the serial number 972,xxx or 97,2xx. If its the later then I know what it is, if the former, then it does not fit in the premodel syndrome. Hope someone else has a S&W book to make sure. Let me know.

The serial number puts it in the Model 10 production according to my book. However, the G2 puts it into the premodel collector range. I'm stumped and need help here! Where are you reading the serial number from and does it have the S&W logo on it?

    Antiquedr?

WOW, I haven't heard or seen of him in months. Last I heard he's got a new handle and is in Europe.

LOL, thanks for the help plano, sorry for the confusion :(

The serial number is 972XXX. No comma to make it 97,2XXX or 972,XXX. It is just the six numbers 972XXX.

I have some pics to show what and where things are.
