What's the first thing you think of when I say: Magnum?

H&H came up with the .375 magnum in 1912. The long tapered case of the .375 designed for use with cordite powder looked a little like a magnum bottle of wine which was 50 oz or equivalent to two bottles. Root word is magnus meaning large so any large high powered shell can be called a magnum. The .375 also originated the belt because the long tapered case did not have a good shoulder to headspace on so the belt took care of that without having to add a rim. It made feeding the cases into the chamber quicker and easier, a good thing when facing a large hairy beast who was close and getting closer with bad intentions on your person.

Not to many African hunters among the general population though so when Kieth and company applied it to the .357 all of a sudden everybody heard about the new fangled high powered round that was to much power for the ordinary human being to handle without serious injury. That is what happens when you are used to shooting 32's or 38's and suddenly you finally get hold of a real gun. :D
