Nothing says cheap like 22lr. The next step up as far as I know is the 22 rim fire magnum and the 17 rim fire magnum. If you reload, then the 22 hornet or K-hornet is nice and cheap, but much more than the 22lr and a little more than the 22 mag.

If you reload, the cheapest you're gonna get is to find a rifle in 357 magnum, and shoot 38 specials in it.

A Marlin 32 H&R lever can be loaded cheaper than a 38, but the guns are hard to find, and expensive when you do.

If you want something in a rifle cartridge that won't break the bank and is found anywhere, you cannot go wrong with .223. Many manufacturers make black rifles and hunting rifles for this stuff.

What kind of shooting are you planning on doing?

For now, I think you still can get ammo shipped to CA, except in some cities (L.A., S.F. and a few more). Sportsman's Supply, Cheaper than Dirt, Cabela's have bulk/surplus ammo, and prolly a few more. Google "surplus ammunition"...

I didn't think you could ship ammo into Kalifornia any more. I thought they passed that law that makes you give your DL# and Fingerprints, Blood Type, Height, Weight, SSN, Mental Evaluation Report, Exactly who you've spoken to for the last 3 years along with background checks on each of them, plus a couple other things too.

Maybe that was just for handgun ammo?

get you a good Mosin Nagant M91/30. they will run you between 100 and 150 bucks depending on where you find it and they shoot that cheap mil-surp 7.62X54R stuff Ms. Piney was talkin about. Careful though, ALL 7.62X54R is corrosive and will eat your rifle bore from the inside out if not cleaned very soon after shooting. Nagants can be very accurate rifles out to 300 meters with the crappy ol' irons they wear. mount a scope and youre in business throughout the effective range of the cartridge (0-800 meters)

Seems like you are wanting a larger caliber than .22 if I read your question right. What are your intended uses?

I have a Marlin Camp 9 that shoots 9mm. It’s a great little gun. No longer made, but you can find them used. I do believe that are a couple of other cartridges, mentioned in this thread already, that will also work in hand guns. My Camp 9 is a blast to shoot, and I use the same ammo in my Glock 17.

.223 is a great cartridge, and I’m itching to shoot one. It’s still .22 caliber, but lots of rifles out there chambered for the .223.
