Hi, I have my grand-fathers Winchester 1890 serial no 764 , and I am looking for a far market value...
it's a 22 short pump , all original, has never seen a gunsmith
Thanks marshfellow, I passed an oil patch down it a few years back and it was mostly clean, , but I'm no expert... anything I should note back to you on to describe the condition ? My dad may have fired it when he was a little boy, but I don't think it's been fired for 75 years, but he keep it clean and oiled, I've done the same over the years... just don't know the order of magnitude on value... 100,1000,10000
Your early production Model 1890 First variation is worth a minimum of $14,000. In a well publicized/attended auction, it could go for several thousand more.
Thanks Bert,
I saw other posts by you, and I was hoping you would comment. I think you are a very trusted source for the Winchester. Those numbers are game changers for me. I had thought of selling the rifle, but now I'm having second thoughts. I had posted that it was my Grand Fathers, but after talking to family, we agree it was my Great Grand Fathers gun, he was well off and lived near Philidelphia , so I think that is where the gun started.
There is one issue that will negatively affect the value... somebody chamfered the bore entrance quite aggressively (well beyond what Winchester would have done at the factory). More then likely the rifling was damaged at the bore face, and it needed to be reworked to fix and accuracy issue. So, it is not 100% factory original, and it was worked on by a gun smith. Still, the rifle is worth a very substantial amount of $$$$$. Early production Model 1890 First variation rifles are very hard to come by, especially with a fair amount of the original case color still one them. If you do sell it, you should contact one of the major auction services.
Thanks Bert,
I guess I should have stated that it never saw a gun smith, as far as I know ; )
actually my image of the bore entrance surprised me also, I had not looked that close and the camera picked out details that I missed.... This is the only 1890 I've ever known, so it's great to get input from people who know and love this rifle.
