M1 Garand

Hi all,

My father recently passed away, and in his possession he had two M1 Garands. One has been kept as a family heirloom, since it was his weekly shooter. The other has been sitting in the gun safe for the past thirty years and has probably been shot less than 10 times when in his possession (not sure how often it was shot prior to that).

My mother would like to sell it, but has no idea what it's worth. My knowledge in this area is just enough to know that M1's range greatly in value. I was hoping someone here might be able to give us a general ballpark?

Overall the condition seems good given the age -- there are a few minor scuffs on the wood, but no obvious signs of rust. My father had noted in his documentation that the barrel was marked HRA 6635448 12-55 R566

Pictures below, and happy to add any additional information that might be needed.

Thanks in advance.

HRA is Harrington and Richardson. Some one correct me if I am wrong, but 12-55 denotes that it was manufactured in Dec 1955. It may have seen some service in the beginning of Nam, but it missed Korea which would greatly minimize its historical value to collectors. I have an HRA, with similar historical challenges, from 1954 that is in almost as nice condition. It missed the ceasefire by a month! lol. I'd say that the ultra low end of that particular rifle would be $750 and the ultra high end would be $1100, all providing the bore is in nice shape. I would shoot for $900 to $1000.

I have a Springfield M1 Garand in very similar condition as yours . I purchased mine from DCM in 1990 for the princely sum of $90 plus shipping. I'm sure my rifle was refurbished at the arsenal but it is a beautiful weapon and puts 150 grain 30 caliber bullets into an old 25 lbs. propane bottle at 400 yards from a solid rest if I do my part. The date stamp on the barrel is 7/41 and the bore is bright and shiny. The way things are these days I'd guess the value of your M1 is $1000 - $1100. Don't take a cent less .
