Very recently there were articles in leading newspapers concerning the number of
sexual assaults on college campuses....mentioned more than anything was the
attire that is worn seemingly to enflame the passions of those accused of the crimes. Chief
Especially in this case. The girls that were asked to change were being allowed to fly for free because their parent works for United. Gifts come with expectations.
I am a retired United employee (36 years). United has always had a "Dress Code". Employees flying on a 'pass' (or friend or family flying on a 'Buddy Pass') are flying at absolute minimal expense as a part of Employee Benefits and are representing United Airlines to the flying public (Paying/Revenue Passengers).
All United Airlines employees are frequently reminded of the Dress Code requirements. I have been retired for almost 10 years, and due to the down-sizing of the United fleet - my wife and I very rarely ever travel by air. There just aren't many open seats available, and flying on a pass means that you are 'Stand-By', so it is increasingly difficult to be able to actually get a seat.
It was the Gate Agent's responsibility to enforce the Dress Code for these non-revenue passengers. According to the press reports - these were '10 year old girls'. I don't know their trip itinerary, but who on earth lets 10 year old children take themselves to the airport, board an airplane, and fly off alone to who-knows-where? There HAD to be an adult involved.
If I were still at United and an employee pulled a stunt like this - I would permanently pull their pass privileges for violation of the Pass Policy, and I would consider termination of that employee for the major embarrassment that they caused United.
Not the one I read. I read that the two that were denied access were "young teens", and the one 10-year-old had a skirt that she pulled on, and was allowed to board with her father. The press report did not say how old the "young teens" were, but were allowed to board a later flight after they found skirts to pull on.
All excellent points, let me just add that these young girls should have been 'tarred and feather' and their parents 'hung by the neck until dead' for the great travesty and injustices that they have incurred upon the American people. This will be a lesson to all to never break a rule as serious as "dress code".
I would invite all of your attention to shots of college campuses, no matter the institution
or the locale...many young women, almost to the point of flaunting their 'God-Given' attributes
like a merchant displaying marketable merchandise out in front of their storefronts!! We
watch Dr. Phil in the afternoons and so many of the cases involve young females protesting
any and all parental control and supervision...much more so the females. Chief
When I was working , there was a dress code when you were using a travel pass weather it was by air , bus , or train or even a taxi. For me the dress code was a jacket and tie. No exeptions.
When you work for a large corperation, you are representing that corperation when it comes to free travel. Once while coming home from work I was at an airport bar having coffee with the bar tender ( old school friend). Someone complained that I was drinking while on company time. If not for a sworn statement of the bartender, I would have been fired.
It should surprise nobody that socialist media blew up over this because of all the leftists who inhabit that world. The most uninformed of us tend to go off half cocked over anything that appears to restrict their "right" to free expression.
Frankly, I'm glad the gate agent knew what to do in this case, and it almost makes me want to book a flight on United.
This is a non issue. All the airlines have a non rev dress code and always have. The ride is free and the only thing they ask is you look presentable. Don't like it pay your own way.
